今週も、久間防衛大臣の原爆失言による辞任と小池ゆり子新防衛大臣の就任など、いろいろありました。安倍首相は、最悪辞任を覚悟しているのか、年金記録問題に絡んだ国民総背番号制に連なる話やら消費税の引き上げやら、選挙前には禁句と思われるようなことにも踏み込んで発言している。退陣すれば、どのような構想も元の木阿弥ではないか、何を考えているのかどうも解せないことが多すぎる内閣だ。
さて、Eurekaの英語版解説が、回想編で独白が多く、従って英語の聴き取りが難しい第１４話“Memory Band”で止まっていた。Stonerの小難しい独白など、全部書き出したいところなんだが、またここで停滞してしまいそうなので、見切り発車的に所々とばして行きます。悪しからず。
“Eureka, I wish I knew who in the world you are.”＝「エウレカ、君は一体何者なんだ。」とここまでが、Rentonの独白。純情で鈍感な彼も、Zone突入など一連の出来事を経験し、Eurekaが尋常の人間ではないことに薄々感づき始めていた。一体全体のin the world。
“My name is just observer.”＝「私の名前は観察者」で始まるRay-out編集責任者Stonerの独白。
“I stand in the middle ground between phenomena and mental images. All sorts of natural phenomena would never be written down in the records, if someone wasn't there to observe it as it happens. All sorts of phenomena can leave their existance to posterity only by being observed with eyes of someone in the middle ground, someone such as myself.”＝「現象と心象の中間に位置する存在。あらゆる自然現象は、何者かによって観察されねばその事象が記録されることはない。あらゆる現象は、私のような中間に位置する者の目によって観察されることによってのみ、その存在を未来に残すことができる。」 phenomenaは複数形、単数形は後で出てくるphenomenon。posterityは集合名詞で子孫、末裔の意。
“Do you know what a Coralian is?”＝「君はCoralianを知っているか」
“Regarding the existance that people refer to as Coralians, there are very few words can be said. Everyone speaks of it as if it was a ghost or a monster. However, in reality, it is nothing to do with either. With Coralian in front of us, the overwelming awe robs us of few words that we can master. Even if we were gifted with the language that was more advanced than we have now, we would still be unable to express it in words nore share with one another emotions we felt while in contact with it. We are powerless when we are in front of Coralian.” ＝「Coralianと呼ばれるものの存在について我々が語れる言葉は少ない。誰もがそれを化け物か幽霊のように語る。しかし、実際はその何れにも当てはまらない。Coralianを前にして、我々の持つ語彙は圧倒的に少ない。もし我々に今の我々以上の語彙が備わったとして、しかし、きっと我々にはそれを表現できないし、その感じ取ったことを分かち合うこともできないであろう。我々は、Coralianの前では圧倒的に無力である。」 うひょー、ここは在り得ない事の仮定、仮定法過去の連続攻撃でした。masterは、身につけていて使えると言うほどの意味、確かにmasterするってそういうことだよね。one anotherは、each otherとほぼ同義で「お互いに」の意。
“We are like an ant crawling in a desert trying to imagine the other side of the skies is like. In this world so full of those speak only superficially. Thereby sealing us off true nature beings. Is it worth anything to play along with this superficiality and weave words of description? If we cannot get the point across, we should try harder. If you don't make extra effort, you should leave this place embracing eternal silence as you go. This is the exact theory they have been proving all this time.”＝「言ってしまえば、それは砂漠を這う蟻が大空の先にあるものを語るに等しい。しかし、伝わらないからと言って、表層だけを語り、本質から逃げると言う行為に満ち溢れたこの世界で、そのやり方に則って言葉をつむぐことに一体どれだけの価値があるのだろうか。伝わらないのなら、伝える努力をするべきだ。その努力をしたくないならば、永遠の沈黙を守ってこの場から立ち去るべきだ。それを彼等は証明していた。」 get acrossは、本来横断すると言う意味だが、転じて意味が通じるの意。His joke did not get across to her.「彼の冗談は彼女に通じなかった。」のように使う。この段落は、日本語が難しくて、英語の方も何だか意訳調です。参考になります。
“To the refters waiting for the big waves, the fact that it existed toward them is evrything needed to know. Everything is spoken through experience. Express with super words prepared in advance for them. But, they choose to express themselves with those words, conbined with the deep truth carried beneath that simplicity of words alone. What do they speak of? The truth. However, only the most superficial words are put to use. And so people are sure to mock them on a cheap and meaningless. Yet, who in the world really knows what truth is? To use lofty language to describe the phenomena that just happened in front of their eyes. That is exactly what makes phenomena seem hyperbolic. A phenomena is what it is. Nothing more, nothing less. And to speak of a phenomenon, one must become a phenomenon itself. But, we are unable to truly acomplish that at feet. The phenomenon exists just outside of our realm, and the phenomena are created from a place other than we stand.” ＝「大波を待つRiderたちにとって、そこに存在していることが全てを表していた。全ては体験を通して語られる。既に用意された安易な言語でしか表現できない彼等は、その安易さの元に持ち合わせた深い真実によってそれを敢えて言葉によって表現する。何を語る？ 真実を。しあｋし、それはあまりにも浅い言葉でしかない。それを人は、陳腐な言葉の羅列としてさげすむであろう。しかし、真実など誰がわかる。目の前で起こった現象に対して高尚な言葉で語ること、それこそがその現象を矮小化させている。現象は現象でしかない。現象を語るには、現象になるしかない。しかし、我々は現象そのものになることはできない。現象は我々以外のところに在り、我々以外のところから発生するものであるからだ。」 ここも、日本語が難しくて良く分からないところなので、英語の方も意訳っぽいです。 mock あざける、あざ笑う。まねる、模倣する。hyperbolicは「誇張された」の意。realmは、王国から転じて領域の意。どう見てもリールムと発音しそうだがレルムが正解。
“That's right. Phenomena happen even if we are not around to witness them. However, they always leave something behind for those that do. Whether that turns out to be injury to witness or material for growth. Wave says none of them really matters.「そうなのだ。現象は俺たちがいなくても起こる。ただ、それを目撃した者たちには何かを残す。それがその者たちにとって、傷となるのか、はたまた糧となるのか。それすら波には関係がない。」
