この第９話Paper Moon Shineは、序盤では物語りの進展がある回で、EurekaとHollandらの暗い過去が語られる重要な会話も多い。B PartのEurekaとRentonの満月の夜空の帰艦飛行は、出会ってまだ間もない二人の気持ちがそれなりに盛り上がる良い場面の一つだと思う。
さて、VodaracのTiptoryおばさんをVodarac巡礼の地、Ciudades del Cieloに送り届けるGekkostate。TiptoryはHollandたちの過去も、高僧Norbに会おうとしていることも全てお見通しのようだ。“You see through everything. Destiny's gate. True enough.”＝「何でもお見通しって訳か。選択の門、確かにね。」
ところが、Hollandは、この今は荒れ果てた巡礼の地に何か因縁があるらしく、長居はしたくないようなそぶりをみせる。そんなHollandの気持ちは露知らず、Hollandの怒りを買ってしまったRentonは、町に飛び出しては見たが、町は瓦礫の山だった。そんな中でTiptoryに再会する。“It may look like a mobile home on the outside, but it's a monastery on the inside.”＝「外見は、トレーラーハウスみたいだけれど、中は修道所だからね。」 “Are the Vodarac really an anti-government organization?”＝「Vodaracって、本当に反政府組織なんですか。」、“No. Why do you think that would be true?”＝「どうしてそう思うんだい。」、“Because, at school, the teachers and all the other kids... They said we really couldn't understand how you guys are spot and you are scary people.”＝「だって、学校でみんなや先生が、きっと何考えてるのか分からなくて、怖い人だって。」、“Things yo don't know or understand can be scary. It's the same for everyone.”＝「知らないことや分からないことがこわいもの、それはみな一緒。」 “This angry land doesn't just belong to human beings, you know.．．． And yet we keep pounding endless number of stakes into the shifting scabs and pretend we have control over them.”＝「この怒れる大地は、人間だけのものじゃないわ。．．．それなのに、揺れるScabに無数の杭を際限なく打ち続けて制圧したつもりでいる。」。“But, the textbooks say that if we didn't have the pile bunkers, we would have the tectonic disturbances.”＝「でも、Pile bunkerがないと、地殻変動が起きると教科書には書いてあった。」、“All right, then, why do the teconic disturbances disappear when we have the pile bunkers. You only know what you've learned from reading something that someone eles has written.”＝「そう。それじゃ、どうしてPile bunkerを打ち込むと地殻変動がなくなるの。あなたは、誰かが書いたことを読んで知っただけ。違う。」
Tiptoryおばさんは、Ciedades del Cieroの歴史についても話を続ける、“Yes, one day, several years ago, this town was attacked by the militia. They destroyed the whole city, tower and all, and then the militia slaughtered people who were here, just because of their deep faith in Vodarac.”＝「数年前のある日、軍がこの街を襲撃したの。塔ごとこの町を破壊しつくしていった。そして、ただ、Vodaracを信じていた人たちを軍は虐殺して行った。」
そこに現れたNirvashとEureka、Rentonを心配して探しに来たのだが、Vodaracの人々はEurekaに投石と罵声をあびせかける。Eurekaは黙ってそれを受け入る。“I was a military dog.”＝「私、本当に軍の犬だったから。」
